what is experimentalism?
“In my mind, if anyone can save the world from destroying itself, it will be the creative minds: the thinkers, the artists, and the avant-garde trailblazers that will ultimately bring down the whole matrix of untruth and set mankind on a less destructive and more spiritual path.” - Bez
Experimentalism is the philosophical belief that to challenge truth is through experiments. As an art and literary form, it can be defined as the commitment to exploring new concepts and representations of the world through methods that go beyond the established conventions of art and literary tradition. Experimentalism has given rise to successive avant-garde movements that evolved in continual reaction against what they regarded as decayed or ossified forms of expression, challenging traditional norms imposed on them.
our manifesto
The Underground will provide a platform for digitally accessible narratives: video, visual, interactive, and trans-genre compositions of two or more forms.
Through The Underground, as a multi-modal digital journal, we will publish writing and art in newer forms, such as trans-genre composition, cross-genre poetry, interactive fiction and media, and other forms, such as music compositions, film, dance, and performance, encapsulating works in unconventional forms strictly under the experimental genre.
The Underground hopes to expand the world of experimental media with the participation of students across all disciplines at Chapman University, promoting an array of perspectives and experiences that can expand the avant-garde. Given the diverse range of submissions we receive, we organize our editors into specialized teams according to the genre or medium of the work submitted, ensuring your work is fairly evaluated
Show us how you’re pushing the limits of your craft and submit to The Underground. Whatever your art form may be, we want to see it.

want to join the team?
We are looking for editors from all areas of study who are familiar with various written and art mediums, and motivated to shape a journal that dares to defy conventions. As an editor, you will attend weekly meetings, pitch ideas, and work with the team to review and edit various submission types, curating a cohesive, dynamic publication.
